Aging in Place - Designing interiors of homes so that elderly may remain in their home, living safe and well.

Bagua or Bak-ua - a 9 section map that overlays in a bird's eye view, the 9 areas of people's qualities in life; wealth/prosperity, reputation, love/relationships, family/ancestors/finishing projects, openness/health, children/starting projects, spirituality/self education, career, and travel/helpful people.

Color Wheel - Great tool to understand the relationship of colors for use in every application of design.  Purchasing one is a great way to understand color.

Complex Color - Has warm and cool colors mixed together.  I think of these as Zen like colors.

Feng Shui  - A 6,000 year old Chinese practice of placement to encourage well being and prosperity.  Many branches have grown into different strengths such as the Black Hat Sect that maps 9 areas of focus called a bak-ua or bagua.  Some focus on actual geography for a building site selection (as they do in Hong Kong), while others focus on numerology (based on the I Ching), and others practice with the placement of remedies such as facets, fresh flowers and meaningful triggers.

Hoarder - Volumes of items that are not organized or categorized.  Usually important and valuable items are combined with those of little or no value.  Considered an anxiety disorder and is treatable with therapies.

Hue

Neutral Color - reduction of colorfulness by adding either black or white (and is seen as earthy and used a lot when staging a home).

Organization - Putting like things together so they may be recalled easier.

Personal Caregiver - A family, mate or friend who cares for another who requires help with daily living tasks or improved quality of life.  If a family member is caring for an elder, there is financial program that one can apply for at their local regional Area Agency on Aging to receive funds for doing this work.  Contact your state's Elder Affairs office for more information and direction to local agencies.  If a family member is caring for an adult who is deemed challenged there are funds for helping that family member care for the adult.

Re-purpose - When an item is bought for one use and is made to be used in another way.  i.e. a dining room hutch can be used as an office organizer.  Rooms may also be re-purposed; a dining room can become a home office.

Architectural communities for those at least age 55 are commonly seen through-out the nation.  Being an active person in great health to being frail and needy is the breadth of this population.  Seniors are generally serviced through each town or city at a Senior Center where social, health and educational sessions are scheduled throughout the business day.  Seniors legal rights and issues are also guarded within the state, at the Secretary of Elder Affairs and driven by the National Association of Areas on Aging (www.n4a.org).
